About Our Tripod

Phi Sigma Pi was founded on a tripod of ideals, which make our organization unique. It is our stated goal to uphold the tripod as follows:

In carrying out the purpose of the National Fraternity, Phi Sigma Pi shall strive to personify and encourage three ideals:
  1. The acquisition and dissemination of information and knowledge through scholarship
  2. The application of professional skills and fostering of leadership qualities by promoting and advancing the welfare of humanity
  3. The fostering of non-discriminatory, fraternal fellowship within Phi Sigma Pi's ranks

Phi Sigma Pi is one-third honor society, one-third service organization, and one-third social fraternity.  We seek to incorporate the best and most beneficial aspects of all these types of organizations into our program.

Here are some more specifics on how we work to uphold each leg of the tripod:

Scholarship
Our commitment to Scholarship is more than just asking you to maintain a 3.0 GPA.  We believe in supporting each other in our quest for knowledge both in and outside of classes.  We do this in many ways:

-- We host a campus-wide speaker once a year. For example, in spring
2007, Phi Sigma Pi brought journalist Coleman McCarthy, who spoke
about the power of pacifism in the face of violence.
-- We developed the Academic Assistance Program to encourage brothers
to study together and to help each other maintain at least a 3.0 GPA.
-- We attend the many speakers and cultural events brought to Kirksville
    by Truman.
-- We also plan and sponsor gatherings among brothers that help promote
scholarship and learning within our organization, such as book clubs,
movie and discussion nights, among many others.

Leadership
There are many opportunities for you to take advantage of leadership skills.  We have ten executive positions and eight committee head positions.  Service also falls into the leadership category, as we feel we are leading by example when organizing and performing acts of service.  Some of the service opportunities we offer include:

-- Taking part in our National service event, Project CARE (Children Are
Reading Everywhere), which promotes literacy and collects books for
    children.
-- We organize the annual Giving Tree project to help area charities
-- Fundraising activities for our National philanthropy, Teach for

America.  Click here to learn more about Phi Sigma Pi's involvement

    with Teach for America.
-- Street Cleaning
-- Sober driving, which is part of our award-winning Risk Management
Program. (Named best in the nation two years straight by
    Nationals).
-- Jello wrestling for the United Way
-- Adopt-A-Child through Christian Children's Fund
-- Volunteering at the Twin Pines, YMCA, Manor Care, Family Advocacy
Center, and Victim Support Services, to name a few
